PERSONALITY
Dick Grayson, AKA Nightwing, is confident, charismatic, and charming, with a strong sense of justice and a deep desire to help others. He is outgoing, friendly, and personable, making him a natural leader and a magnet for friends and allies. He is consistently able to inspire and motivate those around him to do their best, which is... not something he learned from Bruce. His charm also makes him adept at navigating social situations, and he is often able to diffuse tension or convince others to see his point of view.

Despite his social nature, Dick is fiercely independent and self-reliant. He is used to being on his own, having lost his parents at a young age and then leaving Batman's shadow to forge his own path as Nightwing. He is capable of making his own decisions and solving problems on his own, but he knows when to ask for help.

Dick is known for his unwavering determination and persistence in the face of adversity. He has faced many challenges in his life, from the trauma of his parents' death to the physical and mental demands of being a superhero, but he has never given up. He is willing to work hard and persevere in order to achieve his goals, whether it's taking down a villain or repairing a broken relationship.

Dick has a great sense of humor and quick wit, which he uses to lighten the mood and diffuse tension. He is adept at making jokes and quips, but he also knows when to be serious. His humor is a coping mechanism for his trauma, and he uses it to keep himself from becoming too weighed down by his responsibilities.

Despite his tough exterior, Dick is deeply compassionate and empathetic. He cares deeply about his friends and allies, and he is willing to put himself in harm's way to protect them. He is skilled at reading people and understanding their motivations, which makes him an effective mediator. He shows a great deal of concern for the well-being of friends, acquaintances and strangers alike, particularly those who have suffered loss or trauma. He is quick to forgive and willing to give others a second chance, even though he may not extend true trust so quickly.

As the first Robin and former protege of Batman, Dick is highly skilled in combat, acrobatics, and detective work. He is highly intelligent and strategic, able to plan and execute complex operations with precision and efficiency. However, he can also be impulsive at times, making decisions based on his emotions rather than logic.

His personality is shaped by his experiences as Robin and as a member of the Bat-family, as well as his own unique journey as Nightwing. Some of the key events in his life (and how they impacted him) are detailed below:

  • The murder of his parents: When Dick was just a young boy, his parents, John and Mary Grayson, were murdered by a gangster named Tony Zucco. The trauma of his parents' murder has had lasting effects on his emotional and psychological well-being. Dick’s parents weren’t just murdered, they were murdered in front of him — and Dick still blames himself for failing to prevent it. He has struggled for years with issues such as guilt, anger, and a fear of abandonment. He has also had a tendency to be impulsive and to take risks, sometimes recklessly, in his pursuit of justice.

But the tragedy also prompted Bruce Wayne’s decision to take Dick in as his ward. And more significantly, Dick’s parents (and their loss) also gave him a deep sense of empathy and compassion. Dick has a strong desire to protect the innocent and to seek justice for those who have been wronged, in part because he knows what it is like to suffer such a profound loss.

  • Becoming Robin: After his parents' murder, Dick was extremely motivated to find the person responsible and bring him to justice. He began sneaking out to investigate their murder and look for the man who killed them, which Bruce soon discovered, because he's not an idiot. But when he learned that Robin's only goal was to find Zucco and turn him in, Bruce realized that even as a child, Dick was a better man than he was. It was then that he decided to train him as his crimefighting sidekick. Dick took on the name "Robin" in honor of his mother, who had given him the nickname.

During Dick's time as the Boy Wonder, Bruce and Dick developed a strong bond based on their shared experience of loss and their commitment to fighting crime. Bruce served as a mentor to Dick, particularly in his early years, teaching him how to be an effective and responsible crime-fighter. In turn, Dick kept Bruce grounded and connected to his humanity. Bruce could be driven and even obsessive, and Dick reminded him of the importance of compassion, empathy, and human connections.

  • Leaving Batman to become Nightwing: After many years as Batman's sidekick, Dick eventually decided to strike out on his own. Although Dick admires and respects Bruce, their relationship became strained as Dick grew older and began to develop his own identity as a hero. They often butted heads over trust, communication, and leadership. Some of their greatest conflicts have related to Bruce's hardline approach to teaching and mentorship, Bruce's willingness to use unethical tactics (like torture), Bruce's unwillingness to loosen the reigns or give Dick more input, and his seeming inability to trust anyone (even after they’ve proven that they deserve it.)

Following another fight with Batman (after Dick was injured in a fight), Bruce Wayne fired Dick as his sidekick, taking back the “Robin” nickname. After a difficult conversation with Superman, Dick took on the mantle of Nightwing. This marked a significant turning point in his life, as he was able to step outside of Batman’s very long shadow and establish himself as a hero in his own right.

  • The death of Jason Todd: Dick was deeply affected by the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin, who was killed by the Joker. Jason was Dick's successor as Robin, and the two had a complex and sometimes strained relationship. Dick felt partially responsible for Jason's death, believing that he had failed to prepare him for the dangers of being Robin. This guilt and self-doubt caused him to temporarily give up the mantle of Nightwing and step away from the hero life altogether.

His death also had a profound effect on Dick's relationship with Batman. The two had already been growing apart before Jason's death, but the tragedy drove a deeper wedge between them. Dick blamed Batman for Jason's death, feeling that he had not done enough to protect his young partner. This led to a period of estrangement between the two, which lasted for several years.

Ultimately, it forced him to confront his own limitations and come to terms with the risks and sacrifices that come with the job. But it strengthened his resolve and reinforced his commitment to justice and protecting the innocent.

  • Leading the Teen Titans: As Nightwing, Dick became a leader of the Teen Titans, a group of young heroes who banded together to fight crime and protect the world. This marked a significant period of growth for Dick as he learned to lead and mentor others. Dick's leadership skills and charisma were instrumental in the success of the team. But I find a lot of the Titans stuff kind of stupid, so I am not going to do a whole big write up about it.

  • Becoming Batman: After Bruce Wayne was believed to have died during the events of "Final Crisis," Dick took up the mantle of Batman and served as Gotham's Dark Knight for a time, protecting the city in Bruce’s absence. Becoming Batman was a transformative experience for Dick Grayson which forced him to confront his own limitations and grow as a hero. As Nightwing, he had operated primarily with the support of a small team. But as Batman, he was responsible for protecting all of Gotham City, and he quickly realized that this was a daunting task. He had to learn how to delegate responsibility, work with a larger team of allies, and juggle multiple crises at once.

It also challenged him to step into a new role by becoming a mentor to Damian Wayne, Bruce's son and the new Robin. This allowed him to develop his leadership skills and to pass on his knowledge and experience to the next generation.

Dick’s time as Batman also had a significant impact on his relationship with Bruce Wayne. The two had a complex and sometimes fraught relationship, but spending time as Batman -- and learning to grapple with Bruce’s legacy while being true to himself -- helped them to bridge their differences and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of each other.

  • The death of Damian Wayne: As a member of the Bat-family, Dick has suffered many losses over the years, but the death of Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne's son and his Robin, hit him particularly hard. Dick had taken on the role of Batman at the time, taking Damian as his partner and protégé. He had grown close to Damian and had come to see him as a sort of surrogate son, making the loss all the more devastating.

Damian's death challenged his sense of purpose and identity. He had taken on the mantle of Batman in part to honor Bruce Wayne's legacy, but also to protect Damian and to teach him how to be a hero. This event led to a period of introspection for Dick as he grappled with his own mortality and the legacy he would leave behind. Ultimately, the death also brought Dick and Bruce Wayne closer together. The two had had a complicated relationship over the years, but the shared experience of loss and grief allowed them to bond.

  • Reuniting with Bruce Wayne: When Bruce returned, Dick resumed his role as Nightwing and continued to fight crime alongside Batman and the rest of the Bat-family. But they didn’t return to status quo ante. After spending time as the Bat, Dick had more appreciation for the difficulties of the job, and Bruce had more respect for his protege, who held things together in his absence.

  • Getting shot in the head and losing his memories: Dick ultimately got them back and things have mostly returned to status quo, but yeah, getting shot in the head is the kind of thing that will fuck you up for a while. Particularly when you lose all your memories and the Court of Owls uses it as an opportunity to try and recruit you. He's still dealing with the aftermath of his traumatic brain injury to some degree, although he doesn't really talk about it and he usually likes to pretend it never happened. Pretty much classic Dick Grayson "dealing with problems by not dealing with them" behavior.
STRENGTHS
  1. Confidence: Dick is highly confident in his abilities and is not afraid to take charge in difficult situations. This confidence inspires others to trust him and follow his lead.

  2. Charisma & Leadership: Dick is a natural leader and has a magnetic personality that draws others to him. He is able to inspire and motivate those around him, even in the most dire of circumstances. He has a strong moral compass and a deep desire to make the world a better place.

  3. Compassion: Despite his tough exterior, Dick is deeply compassionate and empathetic. He has a strong sense of justice and cares deeply about the well-being of others.

  4. Loyalty: Dick is fiercely loyal to those he cares about, particularly his allies and loved ones. He will go to great lengths to protect and defend them.

  5. Adaptability: As a highly skilled acrobat and detective, Dick is able to think on his feet and adapt to new situations quickly. He is able to come up with creative solutions to complex problems, making him an effective hero.

  6. Honestly, he's just a really good, kind, caring and empathetic person. It's king of boring and repetitive to describe. He's just the best.
WEAKNESSES
  1. Impulsiveness: As a hero, Dick is often driven by his emotions, which can lead him to make impulsive decisions without considering the consequences. Though being able to make snap decisions is good and even necessary, he tends to do it even when it isn't. And while following his gut is good in some circumstances, it doesn't always steer him right.

  2. Stubbornness: Dick can be very stubborn at times, particularly when he believes that he is in the right. This can lead to conflicts with his allies and loved ones. It's not that he doesn't respect others or their opinions, but he has very strong convictions, and he isn't willing to compromise them.

  3. Self-doubt: Despite his confidence and competence, Dick can struggle with self-doubt and insecurity at times. This can make him hesitant to take risks or trust his instincts. This stems in part from Bruce's tendency to pit the kids against each other and make them fight for his approval, but it also stems from his fear of abandonment after the death of his parents.

  4. Difficulty trusting others: Dick does see the best in people, but this doesn't necessarily extend to a willingness to trust them. As someone who has been betrayed in the past, Dick can have a hard time trusting others, particularly new allies or those who have a connection to his past. (Meeting family members and people he knew from the circus goes badly more often than it goes well, has nearly gotten him and Bruce killed, and go him temporarily recruited by the Court of Owls, so this is pretty fair.)

  5. Tendency to blame himself: When things go wrong, Dick often blames himself, even if the situation was beyond his control. This can lead him to become overly self-critical and second-guess his actions. This often undermines his confidence, making him question his judgment and reconsider all of his decisions, even those that had no relationship to the problem.

  6. Eldest Daughter Syndrome: As a result of his parents' death and his guardian's frequent absence, Dick became very parentified and adultified at an early age. Though he wasn't raised with his siblings, he nonetheless sees it as his responsibility to keep the family together, to translate for Bruce to his siblings, and to make up for all of Bruce's deficits as a father. Even though that isn't (and shouldn't be) his job.

  7. Difficulty setting boundaries: Dick is bad at setting boundaries, and usually just kind of refuses to do so. Although he did strike out on his own and create an identity for himself outside of Bruce, he still desperately wants Bruce's approval and often puts his own needs aside to take care of him. He also can't seem to set boundaries with his brothers, or the people he wants to help, pushing himself too far in a vain attempt to make everyone happy at the expense of his own happiness, energy, career, and ultimately his other relationships.

IMPORTANT HEADCANONS
Like the writers of the Gotham Knights video game, apparently, I interpret Dick Grayson (and everyone else until proven otherwise) as bisexual.

I also assume he's the member of the BatFamily who does 90% of their party and vacation planning, especially after Alfred's death.
